Shopify and Moniker Domains

We're currently working on a new project with Shopify and wanted to use our existing Moniker domains with our shop.

This is how we did it:

1) Visit 'My Domains'
2) Click 'Manage my Templates'
3) Click 'Create New Template'

4)From there you need to add the two new CNAME records:

Hostname: www
Address: shop.myshopify.com (or whatever your shop is called)

Hostname: *
Address: shop.myshopify.com (or whatever your shop is called)

5) Proceed to delete the existing A records using the checkboxes.
6) Assign the domain to the template by selecting the domain and then clicking 'Manage Templates'.

Overall we're really happy with Shopify - its very quick and easy to use and a competitive option to selfhosted eCommerce solutions such as PrestaShop.

Recycle Your Device

We've now added the option of recycling a device when the repair quote
is declined. You can still pay $10 for return courier and diagnosis if
you choose not to accept the repair quote.

We believe the most sustainable solution is repairing the actual
device enabling future use. However the next best thing for the planet
is recycling the device. Every device will be broken down before being
exported by our recycling agents.

And we'll add $5 to our Kiva fund for every device recycled.

iPhone 3G Back Panels

The aim of this blog post is to clarify the subject of numerous enquiries; iPhone 3G Back Panels.

Sadly due to the age of many iPhones the panes are starting to crack, split and disintegrate often around the dock connector or headphone jack.

There are lots of resellers selling off replacement panels starting from a few dollars to upwards of $150 all with different names and quips.

As the whole iPhone is essentially assembled from the back panel up, headphone jack, dock assembly and motherboard are all fitted in, ie lack of chassis, it is important to buy high quality replacement parts - why skimp on parts for a $1000 phone?

Non-OEM or Copy
These panels are produced in third party factories in non original molds. Hence they may look glossy, however often have imperfections including missing screw holes, clips and flaws in the design. One major point to notice is that they are often missing the silver 'rings' which go around the camera and headphone jack. These panels should be avoided as they are not worth the hassle of installing. Why fit $20 parts on a $1000+ phone?

High Copy
As you'd imagine these are high quality copies which structurally are close to perfect but may use poorer quality materials or finishing. These come at a much lower cost compared with original panels and offer a similar finish.

Original
These are original panels and are considerably more expensive; won't be found anywhere for much less than $100. These panels are made in the original factory alongside panels shipped in new phones.

Complete Back Panels
These are high copy or original back panels, but with (just about) everything installed including battery headphone jack, plastic/chrome components, bezel and more. This makes any repair much, much simpler and is what we recommend to all clients. The price is very competitive too (saving of about $150 over purchase of individual components).

If you have any questions about this please feel free to email or call us to discuss; we'd love to hear from you.

iPod 5G Audio Faults

Troubleshooting audio faults with the iPod 5th Generation can be a little hard. Here are a few fault-solution scenarios to differentiate when a motherboard or headphone jack assembly is needed.

Fault: Sound only comes out of one side/earphone. I've tried several sets of headphones but it doesn't make a difference.
Solution: A new headphone jack should fix the problem.

Fault: Sound doesn't come out of my headphones at all, I've tried several pairs.
Solution: Try and borrow a dock or remote which plugs in the bottom of the iPod (dock connector) and check to see if sound comes out of that plug. If it does, you need a new headphone jack. If no sound comes out, you need a new motherboard.

Fault: Sound is crackly and occasionally completely stops - even when I am not touching the iPod (headphone jack isn't being moved).
Solution: Try and borrow a dock or remote which plugs in the bottom of the iPod (dock connector) and check to see if clear sound comes out of that plug. If it does, you need a new headphone jack. If the sound is still distorted, you need a new motherboard.

Replace the battery in a Nike+ sensor

My Nike+ sensor battery just died last week. I followed the instructions on Instructables with no major problems. I would avoid using a knife to cut open the sensor. A hacksaw or fretsaw (a few dollars from a local hardware store) and a vice is a much safer option.

To finish up I wrapped some tape around the (remains of) casing and put it back in it's ShoePouch. Cosmetically its not quite as good as a new one, but a saving of $50 makes it a no-brainer.

We have a few spare batteries left over, yours for a mere $2 here.

Forgotten your iPod lock code?

This happened to a client today, not exactly like this, his son 'accidentally' set a lock code on the iPod. So here is what to do if this happens to you:

1) Try a few codes that would seem logical (ie 1111, 0000, 1234 etc).

2) Plug your iPod into the primary computer. Upon disconnecting the iPod it should be unlocked.

3) Finally, in order to remove the code, you will have to restore your iPod using iTunes. This option is under the iPod tab in iTunes. This will remove any songs, data etc on the iPod, so make sure you have a backup!
